Quassia, native to the West Indies, is used in herbal medicine to help with digestive disorders and fevers. It can also be applied topically as an insect repellent.*
It is the bark of the quassia amara tree that is used in herbal and homeopathic medicine. Generally the bark comes in ground-up chips and is used to produce tonic or tinctures. The tonics and tinctures are generally made by steeping the bark in cold water for extended periods of time.
As a hair rinse, it can help reduce dandruff and was once used for head lice.*
Quassia helps regulate nausea and acids in the stomach that may cause indigestion and heartburn. Quassia possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties. This tree is used in herbal medicine to help with digestive disorders and fevers. In modern herbal medicine, quassia amara is used as a tincture to support digestion and liver function. *
